I wanted the interior of The Spa to enhance the spa-goers’ experience and to reflect the marriage of Moroccan tradition and western culture.
I used designer Hilla Levy from the London Furnishing Company. Hilla was given a very tight design brief; an influence from Morocco but not Moroccan. I chose the colour palate very carefully, drawing on the traditional pantones I recalled. Deep reds and burnt oranges, inspired from the colours you see in Kilims and wall coverings in the Souks.
To give the feel of opulence and indulgence, I added bronze, copper and rose golds such as those used in The Spa logo.
Lighting is a major factor for me. Again, I wanted to take the traditional Moroccan lighting and give it a western design slant. Delicate shadows and lighting extruding from hand carved and punched lanterns and shades in subtle levels of lights. Our major lighting materials have been imported from Morocco. In fact they arrived yesterday after being driven across Europe for over a week.
